Hi, I'm Vincent Lévesque and I have been studying Police Technology for one and a half years. This glossary is for anyone who wishes to be in this program or anyone who starts to study in this program.
This type of glossary is really useful for someone that would like to know more about police environment. I will explain more than 20 terms from Wikipedia that are all related to Police Technology.

Autopsy

An autopsy is a surgical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of a corpse by dissection to determine the cause, mode, and manner of death; or the exam may be performed to evaluate any disease or injury that may be present for research or educational purposes.
Example: After someone died due to unknown reasons, an autopsy will be done.

Badge
Noun
A badge is a device or accessory, often containing the insignia of an organization, which is presented or displayed to indicate some feat of service, a special accomplishment, a symbol of authority granted by taking an oath (e.g., police and fire), a sign of legitimate employment or student status, or as a simple means of identification.
Example: A police institution has a badge to distinguish police officers from others.

Bulletproof vest
Noun
A bulletproof vest, also known as a ballistic vest or a bullet-resistant vest, is an item of body armor that helps absorb the impact and reduce or stop penetration to the torso by firearm-fired projectiles and fragmentation from explosions.
Example: Police officers may use this to provide penetration from projectiles or anything else.

Noun
A piece of evidence or information used in the detection of a crime or solving of a mystery.
Example: After an incident, police officers will try to find clues to understand what happened.

Coroner
Noun
A coroner is a government or judicial official who is empowered to conduct or order an inquest into the manner or cause of death, and to investigate or confirm the identity of an unknown person who has been found dead within the coroner's jurisdiction.
Example: If someone died by unknown reasons, a coroner will try to establish and to investigate on the death.

Criminal code
Noun
A criminal code (or penal code) is a document that compiles all, or a significant amount of, a particular jurisdiction's criminal law. Typically, a criminal code will contain offenses that are recognized in the jurisdiction, penalties that might be imposed for these offenses, and some general provisions.
Example: Someone who did a criminal infraction will be sued by aspects of the Criminal code.

Criminal record

A criminal record (not to be confused with a police record or arrest record) is a record of a person's criminal history. The information included in a criminal record and the existence of a criminal record varies between countries and even between jurisdictions within a country.
Example: Police officers may take a look about someone's criminal record after they intercept the person.

A formal or explicit statement or announcement.
Example: Someone who is the victim of something will do a declaration to the police officers.

A gun is a device or ranged weapon designed to propel a projectile using pressure or explosive force.
Example: Police officers have a gun on their belt in case of urgent defense.

Handcuffs are restraint devices designed to secure an individual's wrists in proximity to each other.
Example: Police officers may use this to control someone because he did something wrong or because he didn't cooperate.

Hit-and-run

In traffic laws, a hit-and-run is the criminal act of causing a traffic collision and not stopping afterwards. It is considered a supplemental crime in most jurisdictions.
Example: Someone who scratched someone else's car left as soon as possible just so he won't get any bills.

Hostage

A hostage is a person seized by an abductor in order to compel another party, one which places a high value on liberty, well-being and safety of the person seized—such as a relative, employer, law enforcement, or government—to act, or refrain from acting, in a certain way, often under threat of serious physical harm or death to the hostage(s) after expiration of an ultimatum.
Example: If someone is trying to get someone or something who has a high value, he may be trying to take a hostage with him just so he is going to use the hostage as an ultimatum.

A judge is a person who presides over court proceedings, either alone or as a part of a panel of judges.
Example: If someone is accused of something, a trial may happen and the judge is going to be the one to decide.

Pepper spray

Pepper spray is a tear gas product containing the compound capsicum as the active ingredient that irritates the eyes to cause burning and pain sensations, and temporary blindness.
Example: Police officers may use this if someone doesn't cooperate that is coming closer to them.

Members of the police in every country have a uniform for identification as law-enforcement personnel or agents.
Example: Police officers wear uniforms to distinguish themselves from others and to be well-identified.

A prison, also known as a jail, is a facility in which convicted criminals are confined involuntarily (against their will) and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state as punishment for various crimes.
Example: Someone who committed a criminal infraction may go to prison.

A radar detector is an electronic device used by motorists to detect if their speed is being monitored by police or law enforcement using a radar gun.
Example: Police officers may use this to find out who is over the speed limit. They assure the security on the road.

Example: Someone who wants to get money with bad intentions may try to rob a bank (robbery).

Example: For example, the events about 9/11 have been done by terrorists.
